RNZRSA Volunteer of the Year (Service) - Barry Rankin

We are pleased to announce the first winner in the Service Category of the RNZRSA Volunteer of the Year Awards for 2023.

Barry Rankin has been named Volunteer of the Year in the Service Category as an acknowledgement of his extraordinary efforts identifying the previously unmarked graves at Mt View Cemetery, of 34 World War One and Two veterans who died while in the care of Lake Alice Hospital.

Over many years Barry has given a significant amount of his time to the task of searching Mt View Cemetery, conducting meticulous research to determine which Lake Alice patients interred in unmarked graves were veterans, and working to ensure appropriate plaques or headstones were put in place.

Throughout, Barry has personified one of the RSA’s key values, that of commitment.

The RSA is an organisation focussed on Remembrance, Support and Advocacy. The work that Barry has done has ensured that World War One and Two soldiers who had been cast aside, will now be remembered and honoured for their service.

Congratulations Barry and thank you for your tireless dedication.
