Auckland Choral presents a moving programme entitled ‘War and Peace’
Regional finals of the ANZ RSA Cyril Bassett VC Speech Competition were held in early March. The national final will be held in Wellington at Government House on 4 April 2014.
2014 Competition Details
Speech Subject - ‘New Zealanders at War’
This subject matter embraces New Zealanders who served in the South Africa War, World War One, World War Two, the occupation force in Japan, the Korean War, operations in Malaya and Borneo, Vietnam War, Afghanistan, and numerous Peacekeeping operations such as East Timor and the Middle East.
Speechmakers may choose a particular war/operation or to cover them collectively; or they may choose to profile a servicemen from the past or a living veteran; or an aspect of the commemoration of war (Anzac Day/war memorials).
6–8 minutes. Entrants are advised to check the judging criteria for timing penalties.
Year 12 and 13 students who are New Zealand citizens, and are able to travel independently to regional and national competitions.
Preparation and Delivery
Students must prepare and deliver their own speech. Delivery may not include the use of projection or other imaging or the use of a lectern. See Judging Criteria and Terms and Conditions for more detail.
All students who wish to enter the competition must first register on this website. Registrations open Monday 27 January and close Wednesday 26 February. A link to registrations will be available throughout this period.
Schools with more than one student registered for the competition will hold their own play offs to determine a representative for their school in the regional competition to be held 7 – 9 March. Dates, times and locations for regional competitions are below.

The national final will be held in Wellington at Government House on 4 April 2014, where the national winner will be announced.
Judging, Terms and Conditions
Each Regional Winner receives $1,000 prize money in a ANZ account, a framed Certificate and Youth membership to the RSA. The Regional Winner’s school also receives $1,000.
The National Winner receives a trip to Gallipoli with a chaperone to attend the Anzac Day 2014 commemorations, a further $1,000 travel fund, a laptop and digital camera to record their experience, and a winner’s trophy.
