ANZ RSA Cyril Bassett VC Speech Competition

Regional finals of the ANZ RSA Cyril Bassett VC Speech Competition were held in early March. The national final will be held in Wellington at Government House on 4 April 2014.


2015 Competition Details

 

Speech Subject - ‘New Zealanders in WWI’

The subject 'New Zealander's in WWI' embraces Kiwis who served or were involved in WWI.

Speechmakers may choose a particular operation or cover them collectively. They may choose to profile servicemen or women from the past, a living veteran, or an aspect of the commemoration of WWI (Anzac Day/war memorials).

Speech Duration

6–8 minutes. Entrants are advised to check the judging criteria for timing penalties.

Eligibility

Year 12 and 13 students who are New Zealand citizens, and are able to travel independently to regional and national competitions.

Preparation and Delivery

Students must prepare and deliver their own speech. Delivery may not include the use of projection or other imaging or the use of a lectern. See Judging Criteria and Terms and Conditions for more detail.

Entries

All students who wish to enter the competition must first register on this website. Registrations open Monday 26 January and close Wednesday 25 February 2015.  A link to registrations will be available throughout this period.

Regional Competitions

Schools with more than one student registered for the competition will hold their own play offs to determine a representative for their school in the regional competition to be held 7 – 9 March.  Dates, times and locations for regional competitions are below.

National Final

The national final will be held in Wellington during April 2015, where the national winner will be announced. We'll release more information, including the date and and venue, closer to the time.

Judging, Terms and Conditions 

Students are advised to fully familiarize themselves with the terms and conditions of the competition, and the judging criteria.

Prizes

Each Regional Winner receives $1,000 prize money in a ANZ account, a framed Certificate and Youth membership to the RSA. The Regional Winner’s school also receives $1,000.

The National Winner receives a trip to Gallipoli with a chaperone to attend the Anzac Day 2014 commemorations, a further $1,000 travel fund, a laptop and digital camera to record their experience, and a winner’s trophy.

The winner will be asked to write a blog of their experiences for our website and social media.
