2016 Governor General's Anzac of the Year
Barbara Cunningham

Barbara Cunningham received the Governor General's Anzac of the Year Award for 2016 as recognition of her significant community work. She is dedicated to many positive and significant projects, including the Mataura Community Garden. Read the citation for the 2016 award.




2015 Governor General's Anzac of the Year
Louise Nicholas

The Governor-General, Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae presented the Anzac of the Year Award to Louise Nicholas at a function at Government House. Louise received the award for her work with the New Zealand Law Commission, the New Zealand Police and Rape Prevention Education as a National Survivor Advocate. She displayed great courage and used her experience to help, protect, and advocate for others, and champion change. Read the citation for the 2015 award.




2014 Governor General's Anzac of the Year
Banapa Avatea

The Governor-General, Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae presented the Anzac of the Year Award to Mr Banapa Avatea at a function at Government House. Mr Avatea received the award for his prompt actions which prevented a major accident on State Highway One on 14 February 2014, and for his commitment to teaching the Anzac spirit through his role as Principal of Huntly West School. 2013 Anzac of the Year
Will White and Sergio Schuler

The Governor-General has presented the RSA’s prestigious Anzac of the Year Award to New Zealand’s youngest-ever recipients. At a ceremony in Waihi Beach, cousins Will White and Sergio Schuler, both aged 12, were honored for their remarkable courage and selfless commitment in the rescue of 32-year-old Vincent Shao at Bowen town Beach in Waihi last December. 2012 Anzac of the Year
The Student Volunteer Army

The Student Volunteer Army is the recipient of the 2012 Anzac of the Year in recognition of its significant contribution to the Christchurch community following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. The award was presented to the Student Volunteer Army by the Governor-General, The Right Honorable Ser Jerry Mataparae at the university of Canterbury on Tuesday 24 April 2012. It was the first time the award has been given to a non-military personnel or to more than one person. Read the citationfor the 2012 award.
