New Zealand and The Second World War

by Ian McGibbon

Hodder Moa Beckett, 248 pages softcover, illustrated black and white photographs and maps.

Reviewed by Paul Harrison

This single volume encompasses all the important facts and stories that are contained in the multiple volumes of the official war history branch works that were commissioned post-WWII.

Ian MacGibbon is a very respected historian and author, who has managed, in 80,000 words, to cover New Zealand’s intense contribution to the allied causes during WWII. From 1939 to 1946, the pages portray the war effort from the political scene and the Navy, Army and Air Force involvement.

The work was specifically designed to be readable from all levels of knowledge of WWII, and is an excellent reference book for students studying New Zealand’s history.

Highly recommended as an essential volume on all bookshelves.
