Ronald Mayhill, now aged 90, features in the Memories of Service documentary series, recalling his experiences in the RAF during WWII..
In 2002, Kiwi filmmaker David Blyth captured his grandfather’s WWI experiences in the documentary “Our Oldest Soldier.” David used interviews and stock images to preserve his grandfather’s war stories, before he passed away in 2011, age 105. Watch "Our Oldest Soldier" here.
This inspired David to team up with Hibiscus Coast Community RSA historian Patricia Stroud and create the “Memories of Service” series, this time collating interviews with veterans who served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam.
David explains the conception of the project quite simply – “we sat them in their favorite armchairs and asked them about their experiences,” but the result is something far more powerful.
The 18 men and women interviewed by David recount tales of comradeship, war camps, and life after war in a series of short clips, visuals and anecdotes, giving viewers an unflinching and intimate look into what they saw, heard and did.
