The ANZ RSA Cyril Bassett VC Speech Competition is a partnership between the RSA and ANZ New Zealand, aimed at promoting among young people a deeper understanding and appreciation of the sacrifices made by those who have served New Zealand in wars and armed conflicts overseas.
The competition is open to year 12 and 13 secondary school students. Regional finals are held in eight regions with a national final to decide the overall winner.
Thanks to the generous support of the New Zealand Defence Force, in 2015 all eight regional finalists will travel to Gallipoli to experience the commemoration of the Anzac landings for themselves. These finalists will join 17 other young New Zealanders as part of the 'Gallipoli 2015 Youth Ambassadors NZ' programme, an initiative of the Minister of Veteran Affairs, the Hon Craig Foss.2014 winner Jack Potaka
The competition is a tribute to Cyril Bassett, VC, (1892-1983) who was the only New Zealander at Gallipoli to be awarded the Victoria Cross, and who worked his entire career at The National Bank, now ANZ New Zealand.
The competition is hotly contested throughout the country and enjoys a level of prestige and humility.
Regional finals of the ANZ RSA Cyril Bassett VC Speech Competition will be held in February 2015.
The national final is to be held on 12 March 2015.
